New release:

This is a rather minor update, and more under the hood than on the surface, but still:

  • New ligature glyph tehtaI_tehtaE, in order to display the combination of dot above and andaith attested in Parma Eldalamberon 20. Unlike other ligatures, this ligature is only added after automatic carrier insertion. This means there will still be automatic carrier insertion between the tehta for i and the tehta for e. That is because the new combination is only intended for full writing modes, whereas carrier insertion is only intended for tehtar modes.
  • Updates to the Graphite smarts so they run smoothely on the updated 4.2 grcompiler.
  • The graphite font features that can be chosen from have now ssXX IDs (in imitation of the OpenType Layout tag registry’s Stylistic Set tag). Like this, they work in Firefox if Graphite has been switched on (as you can see on the rough FreeMonoTengwar Graphite Testpage).

New release:

TengwarFormalCSUR11 is an update that includes a few changes:

  • Name changed from Tengwar Formal Unicode to Tengwar Formal CSUR (you should not use Unicode in your font names, and especially not so if the font does not adhere to Unicode’s standards but instead uses a private PUA mapping).
  • Optional diacritic dot/acute (for full writing).
  • Minor code updates in order to conform with updated Graphite and AAT compilers.

There have been minor follow-up changes to the project web.

New releases:

TengwarFormalUC.1.0 is based on Michal Nowakowski’s Tengwar Formal, but places the tengwar in the Personal Use Area of Unicode and uses Graphite and AAT.

FreeMonoTengwar.2010-06.11 includes improved Graphite support and new AAT support.

New releases: These two releases add Graphite support, as provided by Johan Winge. This makes all the fonts’ ligatures work in XeTeX and in the upcoming version 3.2 of OpenOffice.org.

Follow-up changes to the webpages about the FreeMonoTengwar font and to the webpage about embedding tengwar on websites. The FreeMonoTengwar ligature support table has been updated. The embedding tengwar on websites samples have been renewed.

New releases:
  • FreeMonoTengwar.2009-12-30.zip – This introduces new ligatures for aha-tinco, hwesta-tinco and silme-aha. This release departs from the original GNU FreeFont FreeMono font, changing various punctuation signs so they fit in better with the tengwar and removing various character ranges. Also, the PANOSE proportion setting has now the value any.
  • FreeMonoTengwar-embedding.2009-12-30.zip – This release is intended for website authors who want to embed the FreeMonoTengwar font on their website.

Additionally, there is a new page to the project: Embedding Tengwar on Websites. It contains some help for website authors who want to embed tengwar fonts on their website. The other pages have been subsequently adapted.

Aims

The Free Tengwar Font Project aims at developing a family of general purpose fonts that cover J. R. R. Tolkien’s tengwar script and that are compatible with the Unicode standard. Additional aims are tools and documentation for the use of such fonts. Compatibility with Unicode means that these fonts’ tengwar glyphs will not be mapped over any other Unicode character. Instead, they are mapped on the Personal Use Area of Unicode.

Johan Winge’s Tengwar Telcontar font already existed previous to this project. Indeed, it has been an important inspiration, aiming at Unicode compatibility in a tengwar font. Johan’s joining in has been a giant leap for the Free Tengwar Font Project. Another important inspiration has been the GNU FreeFont, aiming at a free software family of fonts that covers a wide range of Unicode. Most of the FreeMonoTengwar font is not original work, but is based on the FreeMono font from the 2009-01-04 GNU FreeFont.
